After many long months anticipating the debut release from Midnight Mystery Club, the wait is over. The San Luis Obispo outfit have unleashed "Reason or Rhyme" into our laps and it's everything we were dreaming of and more. Brimming with syrupy synths, candied disco melodies, and ultramodern vocals, "Reason or Rhyme" presents a dazzling display of nudisco electronica like you've never heard before.
The new 10-track album is a kaleidoscope of sophisticated funk, guiding listeners through twisting narratives from the minds of David Paul Newell and Michael Gray. While lead singles' "Calling Me," "Richest Man in the World," and "Run" give the album a groovy foundation to stand on, some of our new favourites vibe straight into the spotlight. "Orange County" for example, is a sweaty summer anthem with a thick bassline and omnipresent vocals buzzing throughout. The title track "Reason or Rhyme" goes more into the ambient side of MMC's musical library, emanating a deep, feel-filled melody pulsing in the backend. "Alright" is another favourite that graced our Spotify playlists last month, carrying forth classic, four-on-the-floor beats, dizzying horns, and reverb-drenched vocals for good measure.
